A large-scale medical campus project worth $2 billion in Konaev will not be implemented. The investor has not begun developing the allocated plot of 100 hectares, so the project will be stripped of its investment status, and the land will be returned to the state.
WHY THE PROJECT WAS STOPPED
According to MIA "Kazinform", the investor did not take the necessary steps to develop the provided land plot. In this regard, the authorities decided to strip the project of its investment status.
The press service of the Konaev city akimat reported that after the relevant protocol is approved, the land plot will be returned to the state. At the time of publication, the protocol had not yet been approved.
WHAT WAS PLANNED TO BE BUILT
The medical campus was intended to be located in the "Zhana Ile" area. The project included academic buildings, dormitories, a 1,000-bed hospital and clinics.
The campus was to accommodate up to 60,000 students. The volume of investment was estimated at $2 billion, and the implementation period was about five years. More than 3,800 jobs were also expected to be created.
WHAT PLANS WERE LINKED TO KONAEV
Plans to create the campus became known in early 2026. At that time, it was reported that design and estimate documentation was being developed and that construction was intended to begin in 2026. However, the investor did not proceed with developing the allocated land.
Plans to create educational infrastructure in Konaev had been discussed earlier as well. Back in 2022, it was reported that campuses of Almaty universities could be opened in the city. It was assumed that the development of educational sites would help form a new academic environment and reduce the burden on Almaty.
