The Ministry of Internal Affairs reports on methods of installing malicious applications through which third parties gain remote access to smartphones. This creates a risk of unauthorised transactions on bank accounts and leaks of personal data.

HOW 'INFECTION' OCCURS

According to Polisia.kz, malicious applications are distributed to devices running Android in the following ways:

  • distribution of phishing links via messaging apps and social networks;
  • fake mobile applications;
  • applications disguised as photos, videos and documents;
  • messages purporting to be from government bodies, banks and delivery services;
  • calls offering participation in promotions or prize draws, requiring the installation of an application.

After installing such software, remote access to the device becomes possible. This can lead to funds being debited, online loans being taken out, personal data and correspondence being leaked, as well as the device being locked with a ransom demand.

SIGNS AND PROTECTIVE MEASURES

Possible infection may be indicated by rapid battery drain, device overheating, and the appearance of unfamiliar applications.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs recommends:

  • not installing applications at the request of third parties;
  • not disclosing codes from SMS messages;
  • not clicking on suspicious links;
  • checking application permissions;
  • using antivirus software;
  • enabling notifications for banking transactions.

If an infection is suspected, it is necessary to immediately disconnect the internet, contact the bank, and report the matter to law enforcement authorities.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasises that digital security largely depends on the vigilance of users themselves.
