Government agencies and municipal services in Astana are now operating under a new schedule.

From 15 September, a new work schedule came into effect in Astana for government bodies, public utilities and a number of quasi-governmental organisations.

According to Tengrinews.kz, the working day for utility workers and staff at the city administration now begins at 07:30. Other government agencies and companies are also starting work earlier than usual — between 07:30 and 08:00.

Accordingly, the end of the working day will also move to an earlier time. Meanwhile, schools, medical institutions and public service centres (TsONs) will keep their previous operating hours.

The main goal of shifting the schedule is to reduce road congestion during peak hours. According to specialists' calculations, the strain on the capital's streets could decrease by 15–20%. Experts note that this will have a positive effect not only on the transport system, but also on the city's environmental situation.

In addition, the authorities are tightening parking controls. Cars left in violation of the rules and obstructing traffic will be towed to penalty parking lots.

As a reminder, the issue of revising the schedule has been under discussion since spring. In June, the mayor of Astana, Zhenis Kassymbek, stated that an option of an earlier start to the working day for public utilities and government bodies was being considered.

The initiative was supported in the Majilis. MP Assylbek Nuralin noted that the morning hours are more productive, and shifting the start of work to 07:00–08:00 would reduce the burden on the roads.

On 31 August, the city administration officially announced the transition to the new schedule. City authorities expressed hope that the measure would allow for a more even distribution of traffic flows and reduce congestion during peak hours.
