In Uralsk, special services officers from Astana have detained eight people on suspicion of extorting a large sum of money from a businessman. According to preliminary data, the victim is the owner of one of the city's markets.
The detention was reported by the publication "My City", whose editorial office received information about the special operation that took place on 10 June. According to the preliminary version of the investigation, the actions of those detained could be classified as large-scale extortion. The investigation has been transferred to the capital, which indicates the seriousness of the alleged crime and its possible scale.
The public's particular attention was drawn to the fact that, according to sources, among those detained are well-known sports figures in the region. No official confirmation of this information had been received at the time of publication, but these reports are already being actively discussed on social media.
At present, the investigative authorities are considering the issue of a preventive measure for the suspects. It is expected that the corresponding motion will be reviewed by the court in the near future.
Recall that in April, a blogger was detained in Shymkent on suspicion of extorting 12 million tenge from a teacher at a secondary school.
Later in June, we wrote about how an organised criminal group, using a security business as a front, sought to take control of small and medium-sized businesses, particularly entertainment venues. To do so, it applied physical and psychological pressure to owners and staff, including threats and violence. After that, the criminals imposed "security services" on the venues.
