Under the pre-trial investigation into the former chairman of the National Chamber of Entrepreneurs 'Atameken', Abylai Myrzakhmetov, illegally obtained funds totalling 7 billion tenge have been returned to state revenue.
According to the press service of the Anti-Corruption Agency, since the beginning of the year, the department has recovered approximately 195 billion tenge from completed criminal cases. In total, over the last 2.5 years, 1.09 trillion tenge has been returned to the people of Kazakhstan.
Earlier, Myrzakhmetov was found guilty of committing fraud on an especially large scale. He received 5 years in prison. A total of 5.8 billion tenge was confiscated from him.
According to the investigation, Talghat Boranbayev gave Abylai Myrzakhmetov $30 million for help in closing a criminal case against his brother – the convicted businessman Kairat Boranbayev.
It should also be noted that from 2001 to 2002, Myrzakhmetov served as Minister of Transport and Communications. In March 2002, he was suspended from his post for the duration of the criminal investigation, and in June of the same year he was arrested. In May 2003, Myrzakhmetov was charged with organising the theft of state property and sentenced to 5 years suspended imprisonment with confiscation of property.
