Several horses in the village of Zhana-Kiyma, Zhaksyn District, Akmola Region suddenly lost the ability to move and began sitting on the ground. After an examination, specialists determined that the cause of the condition was a tick attack.
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE VILLAGE
According to Channel 7, the affected animals were located on a private farmstead.
According to the TV channel, the animals first stopped walking, then began sitting 'like rabbits', after which their condition worsened — they lay completely on the ground.
WHAT THE EXAMINATION SHOWED
Initially, local veterinary specialists could not determine the cause of the animals' condition. Later, district specialists were brought in to help.
Head of the Veterinary Station of Zhaksyn District, Victoria Imanbayeva, reported that a large number of ticks were found in the groin area of the animals.
"On behalf of the veterinary service, blood was collected for bacteriological testing. Treatment was also immediately prescribed, a drip was set up, and the necessary medications, including antibiotics, were administered," she said.
HOW THE ANIMALS' OWNERS HELPED
The horses' owners also participated in helping the animals. They dug a special pit and positioned the horse so as to reduce pressure on the hindquarters.
This helped reduce the risk of bedsores and swelling, which occur with prolonged lying down.
IS THERE A RISK OF INFECTION
Veterinary doctors emphasised that the disease is not contagious and does not spread to other animals.
