Former son-in-law of Karim Massimov — Azamat Kapenov, who is on the international wanted list, has stated that he holds citizenship of Kyrgyzstan by birth. He also reported that he received Kazakh citizenship in 2001 and lost it in 2015.
WHAT KAPENOV HIMSELF REPORTED
Azamat Kapenov, on his page on Instagram, said that he was born in the city of Przhevalsk (now — Karakol) in the Kirghiz SSR in 1978 and is a citizen of Kyrgyzstan by birth.
HOW KAPENOV EXPLAINED HIS KAZAKH CITIZENSHIP
Azamat Kapenov also reported that he received Kazakh citizenship in 2001. According to him, in 2003 he was invited to work at JSC "NC "Kazakhstan Temir Zholy" (KTZ), where he held leadership positions from 2003 to 2015.
He stated that he lost Kazakh citizenship in 2015 due to moving his permanent residence to the Russian Federation (RF). Kapenov added that he intends to provide documents from the embassy confirming his renunciation of citizenship.
CONTEXT
Azamat Kapenov is the former vice-president of JSC "KazTransRail". He was previously married to the daughter of the former head of the Committee for National Security (KNB) Karim Massimov — Tamilla Karim.
Kapenov is suspected of creating illegal preferences for affiliated companies in the management of freight wagons. According to the investigation, as a result of these actions, the state company "KazTransRail" suffered damages in the amount of 5.2 billion tenge. Kazakhstan has placed Kapenov on the international wanted list. Additionally, a court has sanctioned his arrest in absentia.
