In the Nauryzbai District of Almaty, following resident complaints about odours and deteriorating air quality, an inspection of atmospheric indicators was carried out. The study revealed exceedances of permissible limits for several contaminants, including nitrogen dioxide, benzene and dust.
WHAT INDICATORS DID THE SPECIALISTS FIND?
As reported by LLP "Eco Almaty", the survey was organised jointly with the city's environmental and sanitary services following resident appeals. Analysis of air samples showed a significant exceedance of maximum permissible concentrations for a number of substances.
- nitrogen dioxide — 4.410 mg/m³, with a standard of 0.2 mg/m³;
- benzene — 5.749 mg/m³, with an allowable limit of 0.3 mg/m³;
- suspended particulate matter (dust) — 36.949 mg/m³, with a standard of 0.5 mg/m³.
WHICH SUBSTANCES ARE BEING TESTED FURTHER?
Specialists also examined levels of carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, formaldehyde, hydrogen sulphide, soot and lead. Additional analysis is being carried out on these indicators.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT FURTHER ACTION?
The survey materials have been sent to the relevant authorities. The inspection results will be reviewed in order to take measures and potentially improve the environmental situation in the district.
