Minister of Energy Almasadam Satkaliyev spoke about plans to build three nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Kazakhstan.
According to Informburo.kz, the minister noted that this number of NPPs is necessary to create a so-called 'nuclear cluster'.
"We will proceed based on the need for funds for at least three plants. The site will be determined based on the overall plan for the placement of the NPPs. That is, you cannot plan one first and then another, because the network configuration, the power output scheme, the network voltage, the construction of substations, and the possible use of direct current technologies for transmitting electricity must be understood from the outset. This comprehensive document will be prepared in the near future," said Satkaliyev.
He noted that the proposal will be presented to the government in the second quarter of this year.
It will be recalled that on 6 October 2024, a nationwide referendum was held on the issue of building an NPP in Kazakhstan. In total, more than 7.8 million citizens took part in the vote. Of these, 5.5 million people voted for the construction of the NPP, and about 2 million voted against.
Recently, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov at an expanded government meeting announced the selection of a possible location for the construction of a second NPP in the country.
