The Red Data Book oaks were felled in Almaty

A deputy of the city maslikhat, a representative of the organisation "KazEcoPatrol" Timur Eleusizov stated that in the Turksib district of Almaty on Herzen Street, two oak trees listed in the Red Book were illegally cut down.

According to ORDA, the deputy believes that former and current employees of Medeu Park are involved in the incident.

"The felled oaks were on public land and were listed in the city register of green spaces, where each tree has a forest pathological examination and an identification number. These two oaks were planted in January 1969", the statement says.

According to Timur Eleusizov, the owner of a private house contacted a former inspector of Medeu Park with a request to cut down the trees, bypassing an official application to the ecology department.

"And he, knowing that the felling of Red Book trees is prohibited, nevertheless facilitated this matter, and probably not without payment", the deputy suggested.

It is reported that when the representatives of the eco-patrol arrived at the scene, park workers tried to convince them of the legality of their actions.

The deputy holds the Almaty ecology department responsible for such incidents, pointing to the lack of transparency in their activities. He intends to seek a prosecutor's inspection of the department.

It is noted that this is not the first case of the destruction of Red Book trees in Almaty. In 2020, a similar incident occurred in front of the "Sulpak" store on Tole Bi Street.
