A preliminary hearing has opened in Taldykorgan into the murder of 16-year-old Sherzat Polat – a tragedy that shook Kazakh society in October 2024.
In the dock are nine defendants, all currently held in the local correctional facility No. 71. It is this circumstance that determined the city where the trial is being held. The interests of the victim's family will be represented by a group of six lawyers led by Meirman Shekeyev.
The investigation into this case was unprecedented in its scale. During the inquiry, around forty forensic examinations were conducted and approximately two hundred witnesses were questioned. According to case materials, the suspects underwent verification of their statements at the scene of the incident, as well as confrontations and other investigative actions.
Of particular value in clarifying the circumstances of the case are eight video recordings, which made it possible to provide a legal assessment of the actions of each participant in the tragic events. As a result, the criminal case materials amounted to 62 volumes.
Given the high public resonance, the authorities have decided to ensure maximum transparency of the judicial process. Journalists will be granted access to the courtroom, and a live broadcast of all court hearings will be organised for the general public.
This approach not only demonstrates the openness of justice, but also helps to improve the legal culture of citizens. Broadcasting the proceedings in real time will allow any interested party to independently follow the course of the trial.
The officially stated position of the state involves the rejection of any form of violence and radicalism. The next hearing in the Sherzat Polat case is scheduled for 17 April.
Observers note that the open trial is intended to establish all the circumstances of the case and determine the degree of responsibility of each of the defendants.
The transparency of the procedure may contribute to a more objective perception of the work of the law enforcement and judicial systems. A comprehensive review of the case materials is necessary to reach a decision based on current legislation.
