After the appointment of Kanat Sharlapayev as head of the National Chamber of Entrepreneurs "Atameken", the question arose again in the public sphere — whether he had renounced his British citizenship after receiving a Kazakh passport.

HOW THE INFORMATION WAS VERIFIED

Journalist Dmitry Shishkin reported on his page on Facebook that he decided to verify the information directly and contacted Sharlapayev personally.

According to him, Shishkin simply wrote to the former minister and requested documentary confirmation of his citizenship status.

WHAT RAISED QUESTIONS

Sharlapayev's renunciation of Russian citizenship had previously been officially reported. However, no information about the loss of British citizenship had been published in open sources, which became the reason for the discussions.

RESULT

In response to the request, Shishkin was provided with an official document confirming the loss of UK citizenship.

Judging by the dates, the renunciation procedure took a considerable amount of time and was initiated simultaneously with the processing of Kazakh citizenship.

COMMENT FROM VADIM BOREYKO

Under Shishkin's post, journalist Vadim Boreyko thanked him for providing the data and admitted that he had previously not possessed confirmation of Sharlapayev's renunciation of UK citizenship.

However, he drew attention to the timeline:

  • in February 2022, Sharlapayev began working in Kazakhstan in a high-ranking position, without holding citizenship of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
  • he renounced Russian citizenship in November 2022;
  • he later received Kazakh citizenship;
  • he renounced UK citizenship in November 2023.

According to Boreyko, the question remains open: when exactly was the application to renounce British citizenship submitted, and for how long did he simultaneously hold Kazakh and British passports.
