The importance of critically evaluating information, using the example of the labour conflict in Zhanaozen

Submitted by Вера Александрова on

In modern society, unfortunately, there remains a practice where certain interested parties, pursuing personal agendas, deliberately mislead people. They spread false information, manipulating facts, and incite the public to take part in rallies or protest actions.

Among such people, one can probably count the chairman of the trade union of the 'Drilling Operations Management' Tag Koshanov, who, with his statements about double taxation, misled employees of an oil service company, thereby inciting them to hold a rally.

On 12 November, it became known to the public that employees of 'Drilling Operations Management', which provides services for JSC 'Ozenmunaigas', organised a rally in the city of Zhanaozen. The participants of the action put forward demands for improved working conditions and higher wages.

A week after the start of the protests, videos appeared on social media in which the head of 'Drilling Operations Management', Tag Koshanov, can be heard using threats to call on subordinates to take part in an unofficial strike. It was likely Koshanov's actions that prompted the oil service company's employees to decide on a protest action.

A few days later, the Deputy General Director for Finance of JSC 'Ozenmunaigas' Kuanysh Bekmaganbetov provided the company's official position. He explained in detail to the employees the principles of calculating individual income tax and mandatory pension contributions, refuting claims of possible violations.

It is worth noting that, according to insider information, Tag Koshanov holds the positions of chairman of the trade union and driver, receiving a total remuneration of more than 2 million tenge. In this regard, it can be assumed that it is unlikely he is dissatisfied with his working conditions or salary.

Probably the real reason why Koshanov decided to become an organiser of the protests lies in something else. Therefore, in an era of information openness, it is especially important to develop critical thinking skills.

The editorial board of FBRK has repeatedly reported how interested parties use the population for their own gain, using the example of public hearings in the village of Maraldy, where local residents actively opposed the construction of a factory and the operation of a gold ore quarry, as well as the example of the discussion on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan.

Before deciding to participate in any actions, it is still worthwhile to carefully verify the information received, analyse its sources and reliability. A responsible approach to evaluating facts will help avoid manipulation and make a balanced decision.
