In Astana, the former head of the Republican State Enterprise "Directorate for Sports Development" Samat Yergaliyev has been convicted.
According to the press service of the city courts, he was accused of abusing his official powers.
According to the investigation, while serving as head of the Republican State Enterprise "Directorate for Sports Development", Yergaliyev illegally appointed a certain individual, identified as A., to the position of senior coach for deaflympic sports.
The former director then sent the coach to Italy to participate in the 19th Winter Deaflympics, thereby facilitating the illegal receipt of salary, travel expenses and material benefits totalling over 113 million tenge.
Ultimately, the court found Yergaliyev guilty and sentenced him to 3 years and 6 months of imprisonment with a lifetime ban from holding positions in the civil service and quasi-public sector entities.
It is worth recalling that in July, the head of the Directorate for Sports Development for Olympic sports in Astana was found guilty of corruption and embezzlement of budget funds. The official embezzled more than 60 million tenge and received a bribe of 4 million tenge from a subordinate.
In June, it emerged that former employees of the Almaty Sports Department and its subordinate organisation are suspected of embezzling budget funds. They are accused of stealing more than 56 million tenge by calculating and paying salaries to individuals who were not actually working for the department.
In April, it was reported that in Shymkent, two coaches of eastern martial arts from the School of Higher Sports Mastery No. 3 of the Department of Physical Culture and Sports misappropriated over 27 million tenge. The budget funds were intended for training camps and athletes' travel to competitions.
The accused fully confessed their guilt and compensated for the damage caused during the pre-trial investigation stage. Due to the return of funds, the directorate of the sports school had no claims against the defendants. Consequently, the court handed the coaches suspended sentences.
