Azamat Kapenov, who is wanted internationally by the Anti-Corruption Service, is engaged in legal proceedings with Tamilla Karim, the daughter of Karim Masimov, over the division of property and custody of their children.
According to Ulysmedia.kz, journalists discovered a civil case in the database of the Meshchansky District Court of Moscow concerning the division of jointly acquired property between Azamat Kapenov and Tamilla Karim. The process has been ongoing for the second year.
It is noted that Kapenov owns a two-storey cottage in Serebryany Bor on a plot of area 2,900 m². In 2020, the house was put up for sale for 1 billion rubles. The listing stated that the property included several bedrooms, a sauna, parking for four cars, a laundry room, and other amenities. Today the plot stands empty.
Journalists also learned that Azamat Kapenov owns a mansion with an area of 931 m² in the Rublyovka area, which is valued at 1.2 billion tenge.
It is also reported that Masimov's former son-in-law helped his younger brother, Meder Kapenov, purchase an apartment of 234.3 m² in a prestigious area of Moscow, on Varsonofyevsky Lane. Notably, Meder Kapenov is also on the wanted list of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.
It is noted that in 2023, the owner of this property became the Kapenovs' mother, Aigul Musayeva. At the same time, she removed Azamat from the apartment's registration. Journalists suggest this decision was made to protect the asset from possible confiscation.
As previously became known, Kapenov may be hiding in Dubai, where he is believed to have obtained a second citizenship. In 2022, he took Tamilla Karim to court in the UAE for the right to participate in raising the children. His ex-wife attempted to challenge the decision of the Dubai court in the Moscow City Court.
"She appealed to the Moscow City Court with objections to the recognition of the UAE court ruling on matters concerning non-Muslim foreigners dated 30.12.2022, which stipulated, in particular: establishing joint custody between the claimant and the respondent on a fortnightly basis, whereby the two children spend the first two weeks of each month with their mother and the following two weeks with their father, and so on until the end of the year", the court documents state.
The court in Moscow rejected Tamilla Karim's appeal, noting that the UAE court's decision is valid within the territory of Russia as well.
Furthermore, it is reported that Azamat Kapenov owns several large companies in Kazakhstan, which are formally owned by his mother Aigul Musayeva and his brother Meder Kapenov.
For example, Masimov's former son-in-law is linked to Eurotrans Group LLP, which provides logistics services in the railway transport sector. It is reported that the company transports iron ore from the Bapy deposit in the Karaganda region to China, the owner of which is listed as Bapy Mining LLP. In 2024, Eurotrans Group paid taxes amounting to 375 million tenge.
It will be recalled that in August of last year it was reported that the search for Azamat Kapenov may be linked to the case of Bipek Auto Kazakhstan JSC. Allegedly, earlier the company's founder, Anatoly Balushkin, named Karim Masimov as one of the beneficiaries of the campaign to destroy his business, and Kapenov as the negotiator.
Later, it became known that a trial in absentia had begun in Ust-Kamenogorsk against Anatoly Balushkin. It was reported that in 2020, the authorities terminated the contract with the company and demanded the return of government funds amounting to 174 billion tenge. It is alleged that its representatives failed to fulfil their obligations regarding the industrial assembly of vehicles. The company received tax benefits totalling this amount over 10 years.
In 2023, private bailiffs from the East Kazakhstan Region put up for auction the building complex of the car assembly plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk, which Anatoly Balushkin built in the early 2000s. A railway siding had been laid to it.
At the same time, it became known that the Agency for Financial Monitoring is conducting a pre-trial investigation against the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Asia-Bipek AVTO, Anatoly Balushkin, the General Director of Asia AVTO JSC, Erik Sagymbaev, and a number of top managers of the group of companies. It was reported that they are accused of embezzling more than 230 billion tenge.
