Almaly District Court of Almaty has announced a verdict for 10 defendants accused of embezzling more than 5 billion tenge during the construction of the metro system.
According to the press service of the Main Transport Prosecutor's Office, the defendants, who were directors of KGP "Metropolitan", JSC "Almatymetrokurylis", LLP "Automation and Technology Service", from June 2018 to August 2020, siphoned large sums of money through shell companies.
As a result, the convicted individuals were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment with a ban on working in state and financial organisations.
It is reported that the main suspects received 7 to 8 years of imprisonment.
In addition, the court ordered the confiscation of seized assets worth more than 1 billion tenge, and also recovered the damages caused to the state.
For context, the department previously reported on the completion of the investigation into the directors of KGP "Metropolitan", JSC "Almatymetrokurylis" and other individuals regarding the embezzlement of budget funds totalling more than 5 billion tenge and the issuance of fictitious invoices during the construction of the Almaty metro system.
