The transport prosecutor's office has turned over smuggled goods worth more than 100 million tenge to state revenue.
According to the department's press service, jewellery with diamonds was discovered in one of the postal parcels during customs control at Almaty airport. The valuables arrived from the USA disguised as toys.
Following a lawsuit by the transport prosecutor's office, the Turksib district court decided to transfer the seized items, valued at 60 million tenge, into state ownership.
In another case, the court ordered goods worth approximately 48 million tenge, which had arrived from Turkey disguised as geotextiles, to be turned over to state revenue.
For context, in August a sentence was handed down in Astana to the deputy head of the customs post at the capital's international airport. She was accused of accepting a bribe from a woman who was convicted for importing undeclared medical drugs and gold items valued at 57 million tenge.
In September, at the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border, customs officers discovered gold worth approximately 170 million tenge in a Lexus vehicle. Ingots weighing more than 3 kg were being illegally transported from Kyrgyzstan to Kazakhstan.
