In Kazakhmys Corporation LLP they reported the death of a worker at the East Zhezkazgan mine in the Ulytau region on 19 March.
According to information from the company's press service, the tragedy occurred as a result of an accident.
"At mine No. 57, during the unloading of inventory and materials, a worker born in 1994 fell into the opening of the cargo shaft platform. As a result of the injuries sustained, the worker died at the scene," the statement said.
It is noted that the circumstances and causes of the incident will become known after the accident investigation.
"The management and staff of Kazakhmys express their sincere and deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. His family will be provided with all necessary assistance, payments stipulated by the collective agreement, including funeral expenses," the statement said.
At the same time, Kazakhmys announced a temporary suspension of operations in potentially hazardous areas.
"Due to the increasing number of accidents at the production facilities of the Kazakhmys group of companies, the corporation's management has decided to suspend all technological processes with an elevated level of risk according to approved schedules, starting from today," the statement said.
The company noted that work at these sites will resume only after violations have been rectified.
It is worth noting that this is not the first case of worker deaths at Kazakhmys company facilities in recent years.
Recall that on 6 November 2023, a mine foreman died while performing work at a Kazakhmys company mine. The tragedy was classified as an accident at the time.
On 27 November, Kazakhmys company reported an accident at the Zhaissan mine in the Zhambyl region, as a result of which two workers died.
In December, in the Ulytau region at the Zhylandy mine of Kazakhmys company, another worker died. The company's press service reported at the time that the death was caused by an unintentional collision with an underground self-propelled vehicle.
In October 2024, in the Karaganda region at the Sayak-3 mine of the Kazakhmys corporation, there was a release of carbon monoxide. Two workers died, and several others were taken to hospital.
In January 2025, in the Ulytau region at the Annenskaya mine of the East Zhezkazgan mine, Kazakhmys company, a 5th grade crusher operator died as a result of an industrial accident.
In February, at the Zhomart mine of Kazakhmys Corporation LLP in the Zhanaarka district of the Ulytau region, a collapse of rock mass occurred. The bodies of seven miners were recovered from the rubble.
Later, a government commission reviewed the preliminary findings of the investigation into the tragedy and determined that the main cause of the accident was the accumulation and release of methane from the mine working, followed by an explosion triggered by a spark from electrical equipment.
At the same time, experts identified significant violations of industrial safety and labour protection, and also identified a number of responsible persons.
