The Akim of Almaty Yerbolat Dosayev told residents of the Medeu district at a meeting that in the coming years, drivers of non-eco-friendly vehicles will have to pay to enter certain zones of the city.
According to CMN.KZ, Dosayev stated that the authorities have already drawn up a programme for the next two years.
“We have created a programme for the next 2025-2027. We will implement some measures from 1 July, and others from 1 August. Firstly, we will significantly increase the cost of parking, as all big cities do in order to push out (non-eco-friendly transport - ed.),” the city's Akim explained.
The city's Akim added that the first entry restrictions could come into effect by the end of 2026. Exceptions will be made for residents of Almaty and owners of eco-friendly vehicles.
“For example, cars registered in Almaty but not meeting modern environmental standards may only be able to enter certain zones or the Eastern bypass road for a separate fee. At the same time, owners of electric vehicles and new environmentally friendly cars will be able to pass through for free,” Dosayev explained.
According to the Akim, New York's experience demonstrates positive results in practice, where the introduction of paid entry to certain city zones has significantly improved the transport situation.
