A foreign national was detained at Almaty Airport after approximately 21 kg of cannabis was discovered in her luggage. The illegal cargo was seized, and a pre-trial investigation has been initiated.
HOW THE ILLEGAL CARGO WAS DETECTED
According to the press service of the National Security Committee (NSC), on 30 May officers from the NSC, together with the police, customs authorities, and the Central Asian Regional Information Coordination Centre, foiled an attempt to smuggle narcotics through Almaty Airport.
During a baggage check of a foreign national arriving from a country in Southeast Asia, approximately 21 kg of a plant substance, 'cannabis', was found.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE DETENTION
The illegal cargo was seized, and the suspect was detained.
The police have initiated a pre-trial investigation under Article 286, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan ("Smuggling of items withdrawn from circulation or items whose circulation is restricted").
Further information on the case is not subject to disclosure in accordance with Article 201 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
