A resident of Kazakhstan, who worked as an international lorry driver, is under investigation in Georgia after a painkiller was found in his possession during a search. According to his family, the man faces punishment ranging from 9 years to life imprisonment.
WHAT HAPPENED
According to the family's appeal, the man set off on his journey on 10 March and was travelling through Germany to Georgia. After arriving at the port of Poti, his lorry was searched.
According to his wife, painkilling tablets were found in the driver's first aid kit. The Georgian side claims the medication contains a substance classified as banned. As a result, the man was detained.
WHAT THE FAMILY SAID
The man's wife recorded a video address to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, stating that her husband had no previous criminal record and regularly worked on international routes.
According to her, the family was offered a plea deal, but the appeal claims this requires significant financial resources that the family does not have. The woman also said her husband needs medication for a health condition, but no further details were provided.
WHAT THE FAMILY'S APPEAL REQUESTS
The authors of the appeal have called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to use the diplomatic mechanisms provided for by law to protect the rights of the Kazakh citizen, ensure a fair trial, and provide him with consular assistance.
